What If He Is Right?

What If He Is Right?
by Nick Ashton, CEO/CIO, CommSmart Global Group

I know, some think that I take things to the extreme in the statements and it is all pure marketing hype.

Wrong!

As I listen to Bach this morning on the last day of 2016,  it is the Piano Sonata No.11 in A major.  It reminds of the silly chatter splurged with profound statements.  It is those statements that make all the difference as they form the structure of conversation and to whence and where it goes.

Many ask the questions of why climbers climb daunting mountains, placing their lives on the line with every move they make.  As Bach's Fur Elise now glides through my ears and punctuates these sentences, I fully understand why they climb and accept the crevices and footholds of the mountain before and above them.

It is there and it challenges their human ability to overcome the complexities of mind over matter.  The physical extension of man against nature, knowing one false unprepared move is certain death. They have practiced, trained and making many life-threatening mistakes.  All whilst in a safety harness allowing them to experience and learn from the exceptional mindset of taunting death.

That is the power, to overcome successfully the challenges of life and winning!

Having been at the onset of commercial computing, watching the newborn industry, grow, make mistakes and allow users to become ignorant to what "real computing power" is sickening.

Like everything in life, there is good and evil in all we do.  No one is perfect and never will be.  That does not mean we must give up, cry and feel sorry for ourselves.  It is the drive to be the best at what you do, learning from those stupid mistakes and enacting change.

Cyber security is the perfect example of opinions, facts, and myths.  Since I started back in 1976, Information Technology Management has not changed, not one iota! Still aloof know-it-alls who sadly understand only one way to do things and have never ventured outside of their timid comfort zones.

The black holes of thinking you have all the answers as you waste away in a cocoon abyss.

Forgive me, for I do know what I say!

We are not here to take IT's pants down and show the zits on their rears.

Our collective worldwide team has amassed "real time expertise" in all facets of commerce.  Yes, from analog information to digital data, HR to Production, Sales to Transportation, Customer Service to Change Management and lastly and importantly the Shareholders, Customers/Clients.

Our understanding impacts all.  It is one thing to recognize the issues, it is far different when you can resolve with perfected solutions.

That is the Red Tagged Difference!

Sure, cyber security of entrusted data is at the lowest ebb ever.  Companies being hacked and compromised each and every day.  Your Information Technology department is overwhelmed, understaffed and deficient in the budget to complete the task at hand.

2017 is the year that YOU must protect all entrusted data, report any compromise or attempted compromise of your servers. If not, the fines are massive!

Any company that does business in Europe falls under the EU Data Protection Act.  Meaning you will be fined 4% of your gross if you fail and found guilty.

The positive note is simple, Red Tagged is available.  As Cyber Forensic Anthropologists, we go much deeper in understanding the issues, having the "real time tools" to fully understand and resolve your cyber security issues.

We not only speak English, we speak logic and not gobbledygook! All parties will have a full understanding, the CEO, C-Level Executives, Board and Shareholders alike.  All on one page for the betterment of all.

Goodbye to 2016 and welcome 2017 in with a positive step.

We await your call and are only restricted by time and availability.

First Come, First Protected...

P.S.
My Bach is Worse than My Byte...

Social Media Is Driving Mauls at U.S. Malls

Social Media Is Driving Mauls at U.S. Malls
by Nicholas Ashton, CEO/CIO, CommSmart Global Group - Virtual Crime Center

Social or Anti-Social Media is being used to incite teens to crowd malls and cause disruption.

It is reported that brawls and food-court fights played out at more than a dozen malls across the United States in what proved to be a chaotic day after Christmas mall rush.

The mayhem was captured on social media with photographs, video and a lot of fingers and thumbs posting reasons to come to the mall and get into a fight. The chaos prevented some shoppers from grabbing clothes off clearance racks and returning gifts and the disruption was a level never seen before.

The mall incidents, which ranged from minor melees to mass evacuations, occurred from Colorado to Tennessee and Texas to New Jersey.

Law enforcement does not realize that compliant Social Media Monitoring is available and absolutely assists in catching the criminals.  What pictures and video they post, law enforcement has 'live' access to.  Geo-fencing the location allows you to glean all involved through their social media accounts.  It even allows knowing their exact location and social connections.

CommSmart Global Group, a LexisNexis Risk Solutions Partner has the crime fighting and solving tools NOW!

Align these capabilities with our community crime mapping, crime/predictive analysis with social media monitoring and we will bring you true Digital Policing. Saving you time, money and increasing productivity, whilst protecting your community.

Our professional services include full coaching and mentoring from a global team of ex-law enforcement at all levels.  21 years of global success and understanding is at your service.

Why Would You Destroy Your Home, Culture & City?

Why Would You Destroy Your Home, Culture & City?
By Nicholas Ashton, CEO/CIO, CommSmart Global Group – Virtual Crime Center

Once upon a time your home was your castle, you left the doors unlocked and there was a door knocker for people to knock on your door, to apprise you they wish to come in and converse.  They did not enter on their own until invited in.

What The Hell Happened?

Perfect examples are the Watts Riots or Rebellion, on August 11, 1965, Black motorist was arrested for drunk driving. A minor roadside argument broke out and then escalated into a full-blown fight.

The community reacted in outrage to allegations of police brutality that soon spread, and six days of looting and arson followed. Los Angeles police needed the support of nearly 4,000 members of the California Army National Guard to quell the riots, which resulted in 34 deaths and over $40 million in property damage. The riots were blamed principally on police racism.

It was the city's worst unrest until the then Rodney King riots of 1992.

The 1992 Los Angeles riots, also known as the Rodney King riots, the South Central riots, the 1992 Los Angeles civil disturbance, were a series of riots, lootings, arsons, and civil disturbance that occurred in Los Angeles County, California, in 1992.

The riot started in South Central Los Angeles and then spread out into other areas over a six-day period within the Los Angeles metropolitan area in California. The riots started on April 29 after a trial jury acquitted four police officers of the Los Angeles Police Department of the use of excessive force in the videotaped arrest and beating of Rodney King, following a high-speed police chase. Thousands of people throughout the metropolitan area in Los Angeles rioted over six days following the media announcement of the verdict.

Decades later, California has changed and not for the better.  San Francisco is grappling with out of control crime, community blight and some say it is the liberalization of the city that has sunk them to this despicable level.

Fox News stated:

San Francisco is earning a growing reputation for more than just its unmatched tech sector – for critics, the city stands as a profound example of the damage ultra-liberal policies can do.

After 20 years of envelope-pushing changes to grow government and ease law enforcement, the once-shining City by the Bay has turned into a place where:
  •  Property crime runs amok
  • An online map is needed to track human feces on city streets
  • Discarded syringes are common sightings
  • Public urination is so widespread it has damaged subway elevators and escalators, building walls and power poles

“There’s a very tolerant attitude, you can very much do anything on the streets you want,” said Marc Joffe, director of research at the California Policy Center think tank. “As members of a civilized society, there are things you should not accept. But we have ignored that and there is nobody on the other side setting limits.

San Francisco’s lax attitude is nothing new and has served as a beacon for the American counter-culture dating back to the Beat Generation. But the city’s embrace decades ago of free love and drugs has morphed into something else.

Depending which list you read, San Francisco has the dubious honor of being at or near the top of numerous national surveys tracking homelessness, the cost of housing and other issues. One distinction is not disputed: it has the most property crime in the nation, according to the FBI. The city also has crafted defiant sanctuary city policies and is preparing to battle the incoming Trump administration on the issue.

And in the media, San Francisco’s brand has taken hits, with headlines such as “Why San Francisco is the Worst Place Ever,” “34 percent of Bay Area Residents are Ready to Leave,” and “Complaints of Syringes and Feces Rise Dramatically in SF.”

San Francisco District Attorney Terence Hallinan -- who had taught Marxist seminars and helped run the Communist club at UC Berkeley, an investigation by City Journal Magazine showed – also refused to prosecute “victimless” crimes involving drugs and prostitution, saying his focus was on violent crime. The DA’s resistance to taking a hard line against drugs prompted dealers to flood into the city from across the nation, City Journal reported.

Years later, the mindset remains. Smash-and-grab thefts from locked cars are so common that car repair shops have waiting lists. The city does not want to install surveillance cameras, and its aversion to tougher law enforcement had until recently left its police force at 1980’s staffing levels.

And there's this: “With a crime rate of 70 per one thousand residents, San Francisco has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes,” says the data collection site Neighborhood Scout.

“One's chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 14. Within California, more than 98% of the communities have a lower crime rate than San Francisco.”

Not the picture or a community you want to reside in, millions do and with a leadership that is lost and Police & Sheriff’s agencies involved in more than an uphill battle, which they are in the negative on!

This is a challenge of mega enormity, CommSmart Global Group, a LexisNexis Risk Solutions Partner digests these issues for breakfast, whilst conversing on the solvable unruly concerns.

Our global team has a street level understanding and a listening ear with proven solutions, which will be introduced within the communities, government and law enforcement.

This Year's Christmas…

This Year's Christmas…

No holly or mistletoe just spilled milk and a half ate mince pie…

There are people worse of, no roof over their head, limited clothing and no ‘real’ food in their bellies and having to deal with cold or wet weather does not make it any easier.

People are their own worst enemies, especially it seems those that are married or living together.  It is always words, opinions and disbelief, yes, human nature at its best!

I know the feeling and wish for all that 2017 is a far better year.

Socially the world is in disarray and getting worse day by day, argumentative, disagreement with overtones of silence that lead nowhere.

Individually, we all have problems, some greater than others and we cannot move in the same direction to resolve.  Walking away and starting anew is the only alternative.  Many will do this-this holiday season.

Some will end the misery by taking their own life and leave the world not knowing how it could have easily been solved.  You know thoughts like this have passed through each of our minds when times are that tragic and dire.

Starting all over again might seem difficult, you have to suck it up or cowboy up and move forward for you to be the winner.

Is it really that bad?  From your perspective, yes!

Others never see it that way, they only feel the positive, never your individual pain.

Communications are always the key, tomorrow is another day, and sadly it is always today…

Hope for 2017…

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year To All.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year To All.

It is the waning of another year, 2016 is about to be history and future year of 2017 is just around the corner.  We will have fond memories, successes, tragedy, heartache and unfulfilled dreams all to look back on and it will bring tears of joy and some major disillusionment to us all.

We must take that deep breath, suck it in, cowboy up and step forward with more gusto than ever before.  We collectively will not allow the negative vibes that surround us from those that do not see the same masterpiece as we do and would wish we fail.

To our enemies, thank you for showing the negativity and whilst they scorn us with their obscene energy, we accept, as they are concentrating on just us and not their own business.  We, on the other hand, are concentrating our positive power and professionalism.  It is our goal to serve our clients new, old and those who will be introduced to us over the coming years.

To those who have joined our group of companies, I thank you and look forward working hand in hand with you.  Our success is a joint effort and communications is of the utmost importance.

This Christmas and Holiday Season is special to us one and all and we share this with our families, we shall see you in the New Year to expand our relationships, success, and discussions.

Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New year to All…

WE are in the NOW and KEEP YOU; in the KNOW…

Credible Terrorist Threats? Meaning We Have No Idea!

Credible Terrorist Threats?
Meaning, We Have No Flippin' Idea!
by Nicholas Ashton, CEO/CIO. CommSmart Global group - Virtual Crime Center

I am not enjoying writing this at all, but facts are facts and someone with testicular fortitude has to do it!

78% of all terrorist attacks lately have been Lone Wolf generated events with

NO Prior Distinctive Knowledge whatsoever.

Hearsay, magazine notes and lackluster chatter last one day and one day only, then the public moves on. It is vital we charge the public to assist in every possible way they can.

Law enforcement and alphabet soup agencies globally are doing the best they can with tools that are outdated, underused and operators have not been trained and when they ask for more up-to-date abilities are told, "make do", we don't have the funds.

Yes, you do!  You can't afford the cost on the backend after the tragedy that may have been stopped or disrupted!

Not wishing to blow our own horn, but we did not develop "Atmospherics", the ability to understand, collect and act upon street level chatter for naught!

Our success from the inception of Atmospherics in Iraq proved my point and when we introduced, people laughed, tried to ignore and then, when we showed the positive results, clambered for our solution and to ride on our coattails.

Today those that scoffed at the information collected, which in turn we used in a historical fashion for the basis our Predictive Analytics need to listen up!

It is not about segregating Black or White, Catholic, Jew, Muslim, Hindu or any other religion, including Jedi!

It is about stopping crime, terror attacks, killings of innocent people and solving the outstanding crimes that surround us in this anti-social world.

Ask the U.S. Department of Defence whether we saved hundreds of lives in Afghanistan from the location of IEDs, their answer is a categorical YES!

The algorithmic capabilities of our Virtual Crime Crime, would not be as effective if we had not honed our skills in the ongoing terrorism war.

It also about Social Media Monitoring at a compliant level of professional policing.  Enabling the tracking of Child Sexual Abusers, Human Trafficking Lowlifes, Drug peddlers and users and all through these excuses for humanities, fingers, and thumbs.

So don't tell me there are No Credible Threats, We Know So Different and are here to assist.  We cannot succeed though without the help of the public.

See Something, Say Something is a small price for the public to pay, it will and does save lives.  This ability to serve their fellow man, woman, and child are not asked for, it is demanded!

Someone, somewhere knows something, share it, share it now, we want your input, no, we demand your input!

CommSmart Global Group, a LexisNexis Risk Solutions Partner, is passionate about saving lives and catching the bad guys and girls before they do harm to our fellow man, woman or child.

It does not matter what class, color or creed you are, We are all Human being on a planet that is going to hell in a handbasket!

The best present at this season you can give us all is to get on board NOW!

Our Changing World - Really?

by Nicholas Ashton, CEO/CIO, CommSmart Global Group of Companies

How many times have you heard that it is ‘Changing The World’?  Certainly not always the ‘change for the better’ in all of our eyes.  In business, corporations have to set rules and these guidelines will change as necessary.  People, opinions, and society have radically changed over the decades and what was acceptable 2, 5, 10, 20, 30, or 40 years is not acceptable today.

You could say it started when, in 1776, the British were removed from the Americas and the whole new constitution was signed and still stands, with some amendments today.  There are within this monumental document, Freedoms, and Rights, some say that they are not as relevant today, but they are the law of the land.

Certainly ‘Freedom of Speech’ is one that is in the spotlight.  Is it viewed and used in the same manner as our forefathers placed in the document?

Political correctness has wiggled its way into everyday life, which includes actions and words.  It used to be we could have face to face discussions without getting into each other’s face and having to be pulled apart.

When someone dislikes something it was settled between those that were disagreeing and that was it.  Today, with the onset of social media, the world is informed and voices their opinions and comments without knowing the facts.  This causes a finger firestorm of sorts and all hell breaks loose.  The truth or the ‘real event’ is lost in the thumbing, texting, and Facebook postings.

It is amazing how, in the melee, lies, accusations and downright falsehoods that are stated, as if they were true.  In fact, statements with no relevance are thrown, just like mud and they hope it will stick to their social wall of fantasy contention.

False facts or those posted on the Internet of Things, you know, unsocial media, cannot be believed.

The lies posted by bullying miscreants hiding behind their thumbs, Smartphones, computer screens and tablets fuel the fire.  People, like sheep, follow what they believe is true, it is not.

It is time to be SMART!

From a corporate point of view, your employees and leadership must understand the way of the world today regarding communications.  Reactionary statements always lead to a more explosive issue.  Although we must empower our staff, we must have a set of diversity and cultural rules of engagement.

Yes, there is a demanded requirement for training and setting corporate rules.  Does not matter what business you are conducting, the perception of the public can be broken by a single incident which becomes headlines in seconds globally.
Your legal department must assure all, including the shareholders that the rule book is current and has been explained to all and not just once!

Cultural and diversity training is not a hiring stipulation that all employees attend when they join you.  It is on-going and revised continually.  That is why you have ‘Outside Change Agents’ present and train your staff.  Remember you never really listened to your parents, but you listen to an outsider…

Every company is on stage in the spotlight, no matter what they do.  Staff represents the company in all their actions.  Including posting statements out of work hours on their personal social media accounts.

The Walt Disney Corporation is a prime example of maintaining their image in the public’s eye and they even have issues.  From a liability point of view, you must train and retrain on diversity and cultural situations.

Off the Shelf Programmed Killers

Off the Shelf Programmed Killers
By Nicholas Ashton, CEO/CIO, CommSmart Global Group – Virtual Crime Center

Yesterday, we saw mayhem of terror globally!

Daily there are assassinations, Beheading, Shooting at a Mosque, Truck and car Terrorism and anything else you want to throw at Soft targets!

Killers are trained, programmed and to what degree it does not matter.  They are either sophisticated or uneducated, they are there to take life, draw attention to a cause, whether they live or die themselves, just one programmed task, cause mayhem in the Western World on behalf of a worldwide revolutionary goal, TERROR!

Our team's expertise goes back to the Irish Republican Army (IRA) days, murders, bombing both in Northern Ireland and on the U.K. mainland.  Having either served in the London Metropolitan Police and the British Army, we have frontline experience of terrorism and use that hard and soft skill sets daily!

Since the birth of social media, there has been a dearth of fanatical posting by terrorists who are about to attack the Western World.  These are posted prior to attacks, can we know that these posts occur?

Yes, CommSmart Global Group’s Virtual Crime Center which includes Social Media Monitoring looks at social media, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and videos posted to YouTube.

It is not just looking it is examining all words, locations and with perfected algorithms informing us in ‘real time’ of issues and concerns, even down to the GPS location and includes the ability to Geofence for tight drilling down on social or anti-social sources.

It is our crime analytics, predictive analysis and down to earth capabilities with the largest public data storage globally that will stop or quell these attacks.

There is no one who else that can achieve this.

CommSmart Global Group, a LexisNexis Risk Solutions Partner is the key with nearly fifty years of policing, crime-fighting and counterterrorism understanding that is the professional key to securing and protecting our communities.

The Ohio State University student who posted a rant shortly before he plowed a car into a campus crowd and stabbed people with a butcher knife in an ambush that ended when a police officer shot him dead.

Abdul Razak Ali Artan, 18, wrote on his Facebook page that he had reached a "boiling point," made a reference to "lone wolf attacks" and cited radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki.  These are the sort of ‘keywords’ that we drill down on and our solutions highlight in ‘real time’.

"America! Stop interfering with other countries, especially Muslim Ummah [community]. We are not weak. We are not weak, remember that," the post continues.

Two hours before that, a cryptic post on the page said: "Forgive and forget. Love."  All keywords that are ‘Red Flags’!  It is also our knowledge of other keywords used to mask what they are really saying and to hide their death messages.  That is the difference and is required to fight terror and street crime.

A police officer was on the scene within a minute and killed the assailant, saving lives, university officials said. "He engaged the suspect and eliminated the threat," OSU Police Chief Craig Stone said.

Law enforcement officials stated that Artan was a Somali refugee who left his homeland with his family in 2007, lived in Pakistan and then came to the United States in 2014 as a legal permanent resident.

He lived briefly in a temporary shelter in Dallas before settling in Ohio, according to records maintained by Catholic Charities.  To these charities, do we have questions!

President Trump has stated he wants ‘Extreme Vetting’ and here is the perfect example of finding out what the Catholic Charity actually knew or even asked of this refugee.

Artan attended Columbus State Community College for two years, graduating cum laude with an associate's degree before moving on to Ohio State to continue his studies. He told a campus publication that on his first day at OSU, he was "kind of scared" to pray in public.

"If people look at me, a Muslim praying, I don't know what they're going to think, what's going to happen," Artan was quoted as saying in the Lantern.

What else was he saying that was known to others?  As we know, others will in the next few days come forward and tell us tales of how they felt something was wrong.  They did nothing to report this as most humans do not.  It so important that if you ‘See Something, Say Something’.  Law enforcement is not super humans and needs the public support.

The campus was put on lockdown for 90 minutes after the university first reported an "active shooter" in the chaos of the moment.  Which it was not and as usual the media continued to report an ‘active shooter’ issue for hours.  Reporting must be verified before reporting as misinformation causes unnecessary further panic.

"Run Hide Fight," the university's emergency management office tweeted. "Continue to shelter in place."  This was the most excellent example of using social media to communicate a ‘call for action’, which was heeded as students hunkered down in classrooms with shades drawn across the 2,000-acre campus.
This is not the last terror event that will happen.

Digital Policing is here NOW and we have dedicated our resources to provide the proven solutions that are demanded.

CommSmart Global Group brings you, Accurint® Virtual Crime Center

Linking data into one interface to provide critical investigative intelligence and crime reporting.

For generations, law enforcement agencies have been seeking to have an investigative tool that would link data on people, places, vehicles, and phones into one interface for them to better predict and solve the crime. That tool is nowhere with Accurint® Virtual Crime Center.

CommSmart Global group brings you Accurint Virtual Crime Center and is the next generation policing platform used for COMPSTAT, Analytics, Crime Analysis and Investigations. This solution links billions of public records to agency-provided data in a cross-jurisdictional data exchange to provide law enforcement with unprecedented visibility into crime in their own jurisdiction and around the country. Linking across data types delivers a more comprehensive view into an identity, helping law enforcement to target investigations; identify patterns and predict upcoming events, and deploy resources more efficiently.

Criminals have no boundaries.
Accurint Virtual Crime Center will provide agencies with a view beyond their own jurisdictions into regional and nationwide crime data. Each year, about 12% of the population moves a statistic that is even higher for young adults. To predict and solve crime patterns, you need visibility not just to the jurisdiction next door, but across the country. The ability to view information such as crime incident data, CAD, offender data, crash data and license plate readers in the same place will assist in resolving and preventing crimes in a timely manner.

Finding the “who” in an investigation. Uncovering and locating key individuals are vastly simplified through Accurint Virtual Crime Center. By adding our proprietary linking technology, LexID®, to agency data, you will have cross-jurisdictional agency data linked to identity information from over 10,000 sources. This gives your law enforcement agency the ability to disambiguate RMS records, find non-obvious connections, and generate leads with one search.

Flexible views for all users within an agency.
Accurint Virtual Crime Center allows you to design your dashboard for your role within the agency. Whether you are a part of a command staff, supervisor, investigator or analyst, you will have the ability to search across all your own data and public records information while using the same predictive policing capabilities from Accurint Crime Analysis. Accurint Virtual Crime Center will replace multiple tools agencies currently use for public records, data analytics, and social media, allowing all members of the agency to be more efficient across all cases through strong data analytics.

Social Media Monitoring
We know that social media is increasingly valuable to the way law enforcement professionals operate in both crime prevention and investigation. However, as social media has become more prevalent, there remain many questions regarding how exactly it is utilized to optimal effect in criminal investigations.
Looking at current practices and processes and how the landscape has changed over the last two years in addition to new research areas.

Assessing the law enforcement community – particularly those involved in crime investigations – and their understanding of, proclivity to use, and actual use of social media in law enforcement efforts. We must understand current resources and processes being used by law enforcement when leveraging social media intelligence in investigations.

Social Media Monitoring is the key with the massive public data records we have exclusively and when used in concert with our full CommSmart Global Group Virtual Crime Center allows you more than an edge in crime fighting.

The Police Are Not the Judge & Jury, They Only Uphold the Laws

The Police Are Not the Judge
& Jury, They Only Uphold the Laws
by Nicholas Ashton, CEO/CIO, CommSmart Global Group - Virtual Crime Center

Sir Robert Peels' Nine Peelian Principles:

#5     To seek and preserve public favour, not by pandering to public opinion, but by constantly demonstrating absolutely impartial service to law, in complete independence of policy, and without regard to the justice or injustice of the substance of individual laws, by ready offering of individual service and friendship to all members of the public without regard to their wealth or social standing, by ready exercise of courtesy and friendly good humour, and by ready offering of individual sacrifice in protecting and preserving life.

This #5 Peelian Principle is the heart and soul in terms of separating policing from political influence. Public indulgence is maintained not by providing to the wants and needs of interest groups in our society but rather by complete and total impartial service to the law.

Each and every one of us is considered equal before the law and through observance of the rule of impartiality, the police can make that a reality.

Police policies must not only be autonomous of political influence and they cannot and should not be over-ridden by political agendas. Police policy must provide equivalence of service to all citizens.

The factual test of the fairness of a system is the ability to get the identical service and treatment despite the fact that you have no political connections.

This separation of politics and policy does not imply that politicians cannot provide policy direction. It simply means that once the policy has been put in place there should be no attempt by politicians to influence outcomes or interject themselves into situations on a case by case basis. To do so would “pierce the sacred veil of operations”, the veil being the invisible barrier that separates political decision-making from operational decision making.

It is stated loud and clear by many, that the police must refrain from being publicly critical of prevailing legislation. The role of the police is to enforce laws, not to criticize legislation. The police must also refrain from criticizing judicial decisions as doing so undermines the administration of justice.

Criticism of the law and judicial decisions, especially in terms of sentencing decisions, reveals a glaring lack of their understanding of the police role in the criminal justice system. If police officers are not able to accept that at a personal level that they will not agree with some judicial decision then they are in the wrong line of work. Not only will it cause frustration, it may also lead to flawed decision-making and differential treatment of members of the public.

It is particularly bothersome when senior police executives don’t understand their role and make a public comment critical of judicial decisions. Police executives certainly have a role to play in this regard but it should not be one of offering criticism in an open forum. They have access to politicians both on an individual basis and through advocacy organization such as associations of chiefs of police at both the provincial and federal level which afford the opportunity to air their concerns and make recommendations for change.

This #5 Peelian Principle also makes it clear that individual wealth and social standing should not affect the level of service citizens receive from police.

Because these principles were written in the early 1800’s, race is not mentioned as British society at that time was not racially diverse. In modern society, the delivery of police services and race has become an issue and police service delivery must not only be blind in terms of wealth and social standing, it must also be color blind.

The last facet of this #5 Peelian Principle addresses the readiness to make individual sacrifices to protect and preserve life. Police agencies have an obligation to create a safe workplace for police officers through training, policy, procedures and especially the use of the latest technology and appropriate equipment.

It must be recognized that some aspects of police work are inherently dangerous. This principle addresses the issue of officer safety from the perspective of ensuring that procedures do not become so restrictive that the safety of citizens is negatively affected.
